How Do Air Source Heat Pumps Work?

With conventional Boilers, 1kW of input energy provides less than 1kW of output energy or heat but with an Air Source Heat Pump for every 1kW of electrical energy which is put in this is converted into about 3.6kW of heat energy and this is expressed as the COP.

The simplest way to think of an Air Source Heat Pump is like a fridge but in reverse. As with all fridges you generally make around 4 times more heat during the refrigeration process which is why the back of your fridge is always warm when the fridge is cold.

What the fridge is effectively doing is pumping the heat from the inside of your fridge to the out side, which is why if you stand in front of a running air source heat pump you will feel an icy chill of cold air while your radiators get warm.

What is a COP?

The Co-efficient of Performance (COP) of a Heat Pump is the ratio of the heat delivered divided by the power consumed. The modern Heat Pump technology used in the Ecodan Air Source Heat Pump including the inverter drive with floating set point control has given a step change in seasonal COP.

As with all Heat Pumps we know that to get the maximum efficiency we recommend running the Heat Pump "low and long", for example, the Air Source Heat Pump installed on my house which is a 1980's house with cavity wall and loft insulation, I never turn it off. At 0°C outside air temperature, my Heat Pump delivers radiator temperatures of 38°C which admittedly does not seem a lot but this gives me a room temperature of around 22°C and maximum efficiency from the Heat Pump.
